Closing Parks is Bad for California

Throughout California, Save Our State Parks Campaign partners are working together to send a powerful message to Governor Brown and Legislators: Closing Parks is Bad for California.

Park Closures Put Our Natural Resources at Risk
The unprecedented plan to close 70 state parks puts irreplaceable natural resources at risk. From towering redwood forests to sensitive plant and animal habitats, the parks slated for closure protect and preserve some of California’s most treasured natural resources.

Park Closures Put Our Cultural and Historic Resources at Risk
According to the closure plan, 45% of all State Historic Parks will be closed by July 2012. These are important parks that help keep the history California alive. Many of these parks are popular sites for schools to visit to enhance their educational experience.

Parks slated for closure contain significant historic artifacts related to the gold rush, logging and railways. Some of the parks slated for closure contain protected Native American archeological sites.  Many safeguard historic structures like the Petaluma Adobe, the Bale Grist Mill and the Santa Cruz Mission.

Park Closures Restrict Our Access to Recreational Opportunities
California’s state parks provide Californians will unique outdoor recreation opportunities. Closing 25% of California’s state park system will restrict public access to these recreational opportunities.  When parks are closed, so will the campground, boat launches and picnic areas. Trails will be left unmaintained and other park facilities will be locked.

Closing Parks is Bad for Business

At a time when our economy is struggling and unemployment rates remain high, closing state parks will put increased pressure on struggling businesses and communities that rely on state park visitors for their livelihood. It is clear the closing parks is not just bad for California - Closing Parks is Bad for Business
