SACRAMENTO, CA –Today, Huell Howser, host of California Gold and California's Golden Parks, among other television shows, recorded a public service announcement for the "Save Our State Parks" (SOS) Campaign urging Californians to help stop the Governor's proposal to close 48 state parks. The PSA will run on radio stations in Sacramento, San Luis Obispo, Fresno, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego.
"Huell Howser has been an ardent supporter of California state parks for more than 15 years," said Elizabeth Goldstein, CSPF President. "He has given countless hours of his time to promote state parks. We are thrilled that he has now donated his time and talent to encourage all Californians to take action and save our treasured state parks."
As part of the 2008 budget proposal, the Governor has slated 48 California state parks for closure and a reduction in lifeguard staffing on 16 state beaches. These closures will provide maximum pain for minimal gain as the savings of $13.3 million total less than 1/13th of one percent of the state budget.
In late February, the California State Parks Foundation launched the SOS Campaign to fight the proposed closures. Since its launch, organizations, businesses, local governments and more than 5,100 individuals throughout the state, have joined the cause to generate awareness and take action against the Governor's proposal.
